The Relativity of Deviance
As Howard S. Becker (1966) notes, “It is not the act itself, but the reactions to the act, that make something deviant.” By way of example let’s consider the case of Michael Vick. In 2007, this famous football quarterback was found to have engaged financing an interstate dog fighting operation, directly participating in dog fights and executions of the dogs. While commentator Tucker Carlson (Fox News Channel) recently said that Michael Vick should be executed for his dog fighting crimes, we see that dog fighting was once legal and widely practiced in the US and continues to be seen as a sport in Latin America, Russia, South Africa and many other places. Thus, the perception that it is a deviant act is relative to the culture and time in which the act occurs.
In this essay you should define deviance from a sociological perspective. Briefly describe the Functionalist, Conflict, Symbolic interactionist perspectives as they apply to deviance/crime (note each perspective contains several associated theories). Explain how the perception of deviance differs according to social class, race, gender, nationality, etc? Like the example of dog fighting, find at least one example of the relativity of deviance.
This essay should be at least 800 words and should be very specific about the terms and concepts mentioned in your book and in the readings for the unit.
